Description
Hamantaschen are traditional Jewish Purim cookies, known for their signature triangular shape and delicious fruit, poppy seed, or chocolate fillings. These buttery, slightly crisp cookies are perfect for celebrating Purim or enjoying as a sweet treat any time of year!
Ingredients
For the Dough:
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons orange juice or milk
For the Filling (Choose One or Mix & Match):
1/2 cup raspberry, apricot, or prune jam
1/2 cup poppy seed filling
1/2 cup Nutella or chocolate spread
Instructions
1. Make the Dough
In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
In a separate large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in egg and vanilla, then mix in orange juice.
Gradually add dry ingredients until a dough forms.
Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour.
2. Roll and Cut the Dough
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Roll out dough on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thick.
Use a 3-inch round cookie cutter (or glass) to cut circles.
3. Fill and Shape
Place 1 teaspoon of filling in the center of each circle.
Fold up the edges to form a triangle, pinching corners to seal.
4. Bake
Arrange on a baking sheet and bake for 12–15 minutes, or until lightly golden.
Let cool before serving.
Notes
Don’t overfill—too much filling can cause them to open while baking.
If dough cracks, let it warm slightly before rolling.
Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
